While Google does offer the Advanced Security Program which safeguards users with high visibility and sensitive information from targeted online attacks (think journalists, politicians, human rights activists, etc.), there are other ways to protect yourself and your information beyond this and Google’s excellent, standard account security. The ‘Security Keys’ are also compatible with the ‘Advanced Protection Programme’, which is Google’s most robust security for users at high risk. “Titan Security Keys” have extra “special sauce” from Google-firmware that is embedded in a hardware chip placed within the key that helps to verify that the key has not been tampered with, and it works with popular browsers including Google Chrome and a growing ecosystem of services including Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox and more. “Google’s automated defences securely block the overwhelming majority of sign-in attempts even if an attacker has your username or password, but we always recommend you enable two-step verification (2SV) to further protect your online accounts,” Srinivas added. The ‘Security Keys’ are available first in the US, then followed by other regions. “For those that want the strongest account protection, we have long advocated the use of security keys for 2 step verification,” Sam Srinivas, Director of Product Management, Google Cloud wrote in a blog post. The key was announced in July by Google as a device to authenticate logins over USB and Bluetooth, offering significantly stronger security than a confirmation code. The full kit of the 2FA token is priced at $50, and it includes a USB key, a Bluetooth key and various connectors, the company said in a blog post. On Thursday, Google made its line of two-factor authentication (2FA) device called the “Titan Security Key” which is widely available for purchase through its Play Store for its security-conscious users.
